Hi I am extremely new to sewing and I just got my first sewing machine (brand new brother ls-2125). I read the instructions carefully and was attempting to wind my first bobin when I realized that I have no clue what I am doing. I did everything as instructed but when I press the foot pedal, the engine runs but nothing happens. The needle does not move nor does the bobin wind. I feel like in the process of meeting and greeting my machine I must have flipped some switch or something that would explain this. I don’t think its broken because its new. On all the you tube instructional videos I watched, they all pushed the bobin winder to the right (did that), and then pulled out the balance wheel (mine does not pull out) before they started the motor. Is there something I am missing since I can’t pull my balance wheel out? Is there a switch or lever to go from spinning bobin to moving needle to nothing happening?
here’s a picture on my machine if that helps http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=sewing+machine+brother+ls+2125&cid=3003576451677689476&sa=image#p
Thanks!
I don’t have this particular kind of sewing machine, but on mine when the motor runs but nothing moves it’s because the inside wheel on the right needs to be turned. I haven’t gotten my machine out of the box in more than a year, so I don’t remember what that wheel is for, and you might not even have one, but if you do, try turning it. Hope this helps!
On my machine, I don’t pull out the actual balance wheel but a nob inside the balance wheel. Could that be it?
Many machines have the large wheel that turns and a smaller wheel/knob inside that which is the locking hub.
You hold the outer wheel with your left hand and turn the inner knob/wheel toward you to loosen it (disengage so needle doesn’t move) and away from you to tighten it (engaged so needle moves).
Disengaging the wheel prevents the needle and feed dogs from thrashing around needlessly, but makes the bobbin winder spin.
Engaging the wheel lets you sew, but does not spin the bobbin winder and avoid getting your hair or other things wound up in it by accident.
But that probably doesn’t explain why the bobbin isn’t winding.
The winder likely runs off a little rubber belt; maybe that has slipped off or broken. You’d have to take off the top to look inside.
If it’s brand new, take the machine back to the store for a replacement of the entire machine or at least a free repair.
Even if you bought it used, I hope the shop would fix it for you free.
Reread the section in the manual on winding a bobbin. Turn the bobbin winder off by moving the spindle you put the bobbin on to wind to the left. If it doesn’t allow the needlebar to move, flick the bobbin winder on by moving it to the right, and then move it all the way to the left again.
