I have been sewing clothes for the past 12 years for my girls to wear. Here recently I have had several people ask me why I don’t own a serger. I only know what it is and some of the things it can do. I love making baby clothes for friends and have been told some of the nicer edges that I would love to put on the clothes can be done using a serger. Cost is not an issue, I have heard Bernina are some of the nicer machines. I would like to know why some hold 4 spools and some hold 8 spools, why do some have more then one needle I would like to have a little better understanding before I buy one. My local sewing shop lady was not much help.
I am wanting to buy a Serger, but I know nothing about them.?
i need to learn how to sew?
i’m trying to get into sewing and have my mom’s bernina virtuosa 150, a really good quilter’s machine. i also have a serger. i know how to sew i just don’t know the nitty gritty things like threading and using the machine correctly. do you have any advice?
I have a bernina activa 220 and the… feet? won’t come up?
so the silver part on the machine where the little spikey? things come up and make it so you can actually like sew won’t come up?? What should I do?
Improper serger stitches?
I am sewing with a Bernina 1300DC. My problem is that the machine will sew along just fine and then all of a sudden, the left thread will stop stitching, carrying the thread along the top of the fabric. Then, just as suddenly, it starts to stitch properly again. The stitches form properly except when the left thread messes up. I’ve just changed the needles and rethreaded the machine properly. Oh, every once in awhile, the upper looper thread isn’t caught by the left needle thread. The needles I am using are Organ 130/705H size 80/12BP. It was doing the same thing with other needles. I am sewing on fleece. Can you help me?? Thank you, Cathy
Sewingmachines?
I’m in the market for a new sewing machine. I.m favoring the Janome with the dual feed foot. So many sewers have a Bernina. If it is a better machine, why??? Also, I am looking at the Janome embroidry machine.

Why does my Brother PC420 make a loud knocking sound when stitching?
My Brother pc-420 (Project Runway) machine is only one year old. A few weeks ago, it developed a loud knocking sound while stitching at medium to high speeds. I did the maintenance cleaning recommended in the manual (removing the bobbin and cleaning out the lint). I have followed all manual directions for use as well, so I don’t think that the problem is due to misuse. Anyway, I took my machine to a local Bernina sewing center that is licensed to service Brother. They did routine maintenance and checked for the problem I described–and thought they had solved the problem. I tried out the machine at home. Now the noise is worse and even present at low stitching speeds! All the stitches are even, and the thread is not catching or getting tangled, so I don’t think the tension is a problem. Any ideas? It sounds like the machine is about to come apart “at the seams”–literally and figuratively!!!!
Bernina 707 sewing machine?
How much should i charge if i was selling a Bernina 707 Sewing machine in great working condition ?
Bernina 1230 sewing machine?
I have a bernina 1230 sewing machine, and i was wondering if it embroiders??? My aunt once told me that it did, but she has since passed so I have no clue. If it does, where can i get the accessories for it?
Bernina 200E Hook Error?
Since I purchased my Bernina 200E 2 years ago I have a recurring problem- an error that says “check hook system”. This error follows a noisy sewing session, and the machine “freezing up”. Sometimes the needle gets “stuck” in the down position too.
It happens mid project with a variety of fabrics and stitch designs – no apparent pattern. I’ve had the machine serviced three times, and it works ok for a while afterward, but the same problem occurs over time. I’d love to know if there is anything I can do myself to fix this – The dealer doesn’t seem to be fixing the problem long term.
Any information/recommendations are much appreciated!
What is the difference between a serger, coverstitch machine and an overlock machine?
http://www.bernina.co.uk/009DCC.html
The link above is a link to the coverstitch machine I’m referring to. Are they all the same? Or do they each do separate things in sewing?
sewing (textiles)?

My sewing machine struggles sometimes to stitch….?
I have a vintage Bernina 830, and at times it seems to struggle to sew (like it is being held back in some way and it is having a hard time with the needle raising and lowering). I have cleaned out the bobbin area and feed plates often, tried different needles, made sure to pull back the threads to the back when starting the seam, it seems to be getting worse. Anyone have any thoughts why this is happening?
Thanks, Kay, my local library didn’t have the book, but I found it on Amazon used books. It sounds like it needs servicing, I have had it for about a year, and am not sure when the previous owner had it in to be looked. Do you know how to find a good place to service it in Portland, OR? I’ve located one place that works on Berninas, but was looking for a recommendation on vintage models.
Sewing machine repairman. Pro’s and Cons?
Am looking at going to a Bernina school in Chicago next month, take a course and become certified. It seems this is a more and more scarce proffesion. Any thoughts?
Serious ones?
Actually old sewing machines have been a hobby of mine for a long time. Sewing machine repairmen mostley are independent contractors. What I would be learning the most is electronics and circuitry.
Sewing machine bobbin help?PLEASE?
I have a Bernina Patchwork Edition 140 that I am borrowing. I havonly used it twice and both times it has worked great. I tried to start on a project but the bottom thread is being tricky. Each time I go to sew, It starts, but it doesn’t move and the tread gets in piles on the bottom. I’ve tried looking in the manuel, rethreading the machine and the bobbin, and nothing seems to work. Please be serious about this; I really love sewing but it’s kinda hard to do when your machine isn’t working.
Sewing Machine Comparison?
Ok, so all of my husbands siblings and I are planning on purchasing a sewing machine for my mother-in-law for Christmas. We’ve got a fairly small budget as far as sewing machines go and none of us really know anything about sewing machines.
I’ve done some basic research and discovered that avoiding Singer and Brother were in our best interests. So in the opinions of you sewers out there, is a Janome Magnolia 7318 or a Bernette 65 by Bernina the better way to go?
She’s an intermediate-advanced sewer, and right now she’s working on about a 20 year old machine that’s about to break down..
Any advice you have would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
What kind of sewing machine is right for me?
Hi! I’m fifteen years old and have been sewing since I was about eight. I learned through 4H and have continued to sew things for fair as well as for fun. One of my hobbies is fashion and I make most of my own clothes. I also dabble in quilting. My problem is, I am restricted by my sewing machine. It’s actually my mom’s and it’s a Bernina that’s quite possibly a certafiable antique. It’s cool and all, but unfortunately not reliable. I’m looking into buying a new machine or asking for one for Christmas. I would like a decent one with multiple stitch settings and sizes. However, I don’t necessarily need a digital screen or anything like that. Does anyone know of a good, sturdy machine that works well with different fabrics as well as quilting? (I know you need a different needle.) Is there a certain brand? (I like the Bernina, but what’s your favorite?) Hopefully I will be able to but this at either JoAnn’s or Hobby Lobby. Otherwise I’ll need to order it.
Thanks in advance for your help!
My sewing machine won’t do a zigzag – help?
My machine is a Bernina 807 minimatic. It’s fairly old and I picked it up on the cheap about six months ago, but it’s been working just fine.
Thing is, it’s just recently started having hissy fits when I want it to do anything other that a straight stitch. I’ll set it to zigzag and the needle will go through the motions, but the stitch comes out all erratic – it’ll do one zigzag, then straight, then a couple more zigzags, then it’ll bunch up… you get the idea.
Any idea what could be causing this, and what I could do to solve it?
Why is my sewing machine sewing in one spot?
I was sewing along on the same Bernina that I’ve used for years and years. I am sewing two pieces of fabric together, straight seam. All of a sudden, the feed dogs stop feeding it through, causing the machine to sew in one spot. I took everything out, checked the feed dogs and they seem to be working just fine, very weird. I got a scrap and have tried everything I know, to no avail. I moved and CANNOT find my book! UGH! I just cleaned and oiled it before this project. I just finished a dress and did a decorative stitch on a large cross and it worked beautifully, as always. So, now, this is just puzzling.
What is a good price for a used Bernina activa 220?
I am trying to buy my mom a sewing machine for Christmas. I found a Bernina activa 220 from an authorized dealer for $625 including classes, a warranty, and servicing. I think this is an amazing price but I want to make sure. Is this a good deal? If not what is?
Sewing Machine Suggestions?
I recently broke my Bernette (Bernina brand). I am in the market for another sewing machine but don’t have any clue where to even look. I am looking at paying around 300.00 dollars for it – could be a little more or a little less.
I am not a huge sewer – mostly hemming pants, sewing costumes and other little craft projects. It was actually my ignorance that broke my bernina.
Any suggestions on machines. I want something durable and good quality – a little above what a typical crafter needs.
Which sewing machine shall I buy?
I am looking at a Bernina and a Viking.
How do I thread my sewing machine?
It’s a Bernina artista 180, and I can figure out the basics of how to thread the main thread (I’m not 100% sure it’s right), and I have no clue how to thread the bobbin. Help?
Can anyone recommend a good portable sewing machine?
I need a good basic mid-range machine for classes & for at home. Something a little nicer than the ones for sale at wal-mart but not in the $thousands Bernina range either.
Tough decision on sewing machine to buy.?
My local Bernina dealer is having a company rep come down. If I go through a little weekend afternoon sales pitch I can get $200 off the basic Bernette 55 model. It retails for about 400 so that would be 50% discount. BUT I’m real tempted to go to Wallyworld and just get a $100 machine now, now, now.
Bernina Pros
I will get lessons from my local dealer, phone help, probably an okay warranty, maybe could trade it in later.
Bernina Cons
Are they really better than a Walmart basic Brother? All stuff is cheap these days. How can this base model Bernetter really be worth the x-tra 100 bucks?
Walmart Pros
I can have it now with out the sales pitching. My housemates is a seamstress and can show me alot on my basic machine.
If I outgrow it quick I can sell it online just a quick.
Walmart Cons
Maybe it won’t sew as well in some way. I have no clue about sewing so I don’t want a machine that doesn’t do a good job and frustrates me and discourages me from sewing.
I can’t “use the one I have”. I don’t have one. My housemate does but it’s hers and I don’t want to invade her space especially while I’m bumbling through the learning process.
What other sewing machine brands does Janome make?
I heard that alot of the old Swiss made sewing machines have been bought by other companies. Does anyone know who makes what? Elna & Kenmore made by Janome? Singer by Juki? Bernina? Viking? Ok I know those all aren’t “Swiss” companies but I’m just curious. Looking into buying a machine and just doing research. So recommendations on brands, etc. would be appreciated. I’d call myself a beginner since it’s been 15yrs+ since I’ve used a machine and I only plan simple projects like blankets, pillow, drapes, etc. (for now.) So basic is fine.Been considering some used Vikings & Elnas, & new Kenmore, budget under $175. Thanks.
What is wrong with my sewing machine?
I have a “BERNINA record 830″ sewing machine and it is acting way weird. The needle won’t move when i press the pedal or turn the hand wheel. if anyone knows anything that will help, it would be very helpful! Thank you!
oh and it is a very old machine
What is the best sewing machine for garment making?
What brands (Viking, Janome, Bernina, etc)?
Also, what essential features are a must-have on a sewing machine particularly for garment making?
How can I install my Bernina 56 in my sewing cabinet?
Just bought a new sewing machine, how can I install it into my little table with the drop down area for sewing machines?
Opinion of Bernina Aurora Sewing Machines?
I’m thinking of buying one and would like to know if anyone knows if a 440 is a better machine than a 430 or does it just have more bells and whistles?
I can get the BSR foot with the 430 and it will cost me less than a 440.
which sewing machine should I buy? Janome or Bernina?
I will be using the machine to quilt.
