I am 16 years old and I’ve had my mind set on fashion designing since I was 12, I own a sewing machine and I’ve just been working on basic stuff like pillows, blankets, and customized rugs for my mom and sisters. I’ve made blankets and pillows for my friends, and new babies in the family. But now I’m ready to move up a level and design things like dresses, shirts, shoes, handbags, skirts, jeans, dress pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, and drawstring bags. I know this is going to be complicating, but this is something that I really love doing and was hoping if there is anyone that could give me some tips like where to find leather fabrics, and the special type of fabrics used to make clothing, shoes and all the other stuff I listed. I also want to know how I could get them into the industry to where I could be discovered and peple could wear my designed clothes. I want to make clothes for boys and girls. Any tips?

ever since I can remember, I have always rocked back and fourth. They say I will grow out of it, but i am 18 now and I am still doing it. I rock on my couch in the living room. I rock in the car, even when I am driving. When i stop rocking, I feel restless and uncomfortable. People always tell me to stop rocking because it is annoying to watch, but it is sooooo uncomfortable. If i do stop, I will do the sewing machine with my legs. My back is starting to hurt now when I go to bed and I know its because of my rocking so it is effecting my life now. There is also a tear in the leather couch because of it and my parents are pissed about that.
has anyone experienced the same thing and what could I do about this?
I dont do it when i am nervous or anything like that. It does not calm my nerves. Im just plain uncomfortable when I am not doing it. Like right now, my back is tingling and I just have this urge to rock. Gaawwwd Its so annoying.

Okay, so this is it. I’m going to a rock club on Friday, and I have literally no money to waste on getting something new. But I wasn’t to wear something new, if you get what I mean.
I’m quite handy with a sewing machine, and a needle and thread if it means I have to make something out of what I already have, but note, I have no money to spend on anything.
So this is it.
Here are some of the clothes that I have, maybe you can pick something out for me, or can help me in ‘modifying’ some of my items.
I really want to wear this skin tight black leather jacket I have in the house, so that is a must. Help me work around that?!
Leather Jacket. (Must)
DRESSES
Chinese pleated dress. – Mainly black, with creams and red going through it.
Black fitted dress.
Black fitted dress. – Scoop neck/back.
SKIRTS
Black tulip skirt.
Pink frilly skirt.
SHIRTS
Plain shirts. – White, cream, black, blue.
Black band shirt. – Converge.
White band shirt. – Alexisonfire.
Black tank top.
JEANS
Skinny navy blue jeans.
SHOES
Black heels. – Peep toe, flower on the top of the toes.
White heels. – Peep toe, gold buckle on the side.
Black heels. – Platform, high brown marble effect heel.
I probably have quite a bit more, but I’m thinking off the top of my head, and what would look good to wear.
I have belt, and jewellery too so that won’t be much of a problem.
Really need your help guys!

I have this bag from A&F and the seams on the leather patch are starting to become undone. I was thinking I could just use the sewing machine on it in sewing class, but I’m not sure how it would turn out. I’ve only been in sewing for a few weeks and I have no previous sewing experience. Do you think it would look okay?
Here’s a picture of the bag, just incase you were curious

ATM I have a tattered leather type slip cover ( I have cat who LOVES leather)
I want to make a new slip cover, I was thinking of taking a sheet and laying it over and tucking in . I have a tiny starter sewing machine but really am not good. Any ideas for making a decent low cost slip cover? I have a sectional in 3 peices and the one on it doesn’t fit well anyway.
Wha i thought of doing was doing seat pillows separate in a smaller sheet (maybe cut it up so it fits and use hot glue gun on bottom) then do the whole thing separate.
Thanks in advance

I do very little sewing but I do have an old machine. I figure I can sort out how to do this. In case you want to suggest a color too, I have beige walls, beige carpet, a navy blue leather sofa and medium colored wood end tables, book cases. Would a lighter blue work? There are 5 windows about 60 inches wide and about 68 in length. A 18 inch valence? Thanks for all ideas. PS I want to avoid a real expensive drpaery material in case I mess it up.

I am a very beginner sewer. I can thread a machine easily and sew in a mostly straight line, but that’s about where my expertise stops. So even when my little sister told me I should’ve done this in a different order, I stupidly, didn’t listen. I folded over the top of a length of fabric and sewed it down so that now there is a tube. Now I need to thread some leather cording through that tube I made. The problem is that I should’ve put the cording in before I sewed it down and I have no idea how I’m going to do it now. Any helpful hints? I’ve pulled a string through on drawstring pants and a backpack once before that had slipped back in their holes, but I know there’s an easier way than how I did it. I was thinking about using a loop turner even though I don’t need the fabric to be turned inside out. I figure maybe I can cinch it enough where I can pull the cording through?

Sorry if any guys read this but here goes. My nipples have thickened up so much that it feels like they’re made of 1/4 inch of leather. I also have some marks like a sewing machine got me there as well. My breasts are thickening too, but not as much. It’s not the same kind of growing that happened in my first pregnancy, this is different.I’m seeing a maternal-fetal medicine specialist Wed, but I was hoping to hear if this happened to anyone else. I’m 18 weeks pregnant with boy/girl twins and I’ve had one successful pregnancy before. This stuff did NOT happen the first time. Thank you.

I am trying really hard to start promoting my clothing line and I’m having a bit of a problem… I do not posess any sewing skills on a machine only by hand really, I just recently lost my job and I am hanging on by a thread. I am holding on for dear life to pursure my life long dream and I know right now to some my hopes and dreams should be put on hold and people feel I should look for yet again another domestic job however I dont like working at a job I do not feel passionate about and have no interest in!!! Plus I want to be my own boss!!! I mean I am an aspiring freelance fashion designer and I have been in love with the creative process of garment construction (as I call it) since the early age of 7 {when I saw my mothers hand made light blue suede and leather trimmed jeweled encrusted peep toe 4 inch stilletos she attended Berkley college at the time} I am a very independent thinker as well as free spirited when it comes to fashion design and my choice of apparel!! I’ve always apprecitated fashion design for freedom of choice and brilliant creativity in clothing and various intricate designs and attention to detail and fabric selection and patterns.. I’m just completely fascinated with the world of fashion I am like a visionary in my own little world because everything surrounding me is art in its own form!! i design for all shapes and sizes and i create everyday couture with a kind of new york city street style meets meets japanese fashion!!!! my designs can be worn by the everyday male and female so please if anyone has any advice or would like to converse with me or would like to help me contact me by answering here or emailing me personally!!! email: BEF24Magalee@aol.com

Hi! I’m working on a craft project, and I’ve tried a lot of glues that just haven’t worked. I’ve heard e-6000 is good.. anyone tried it? I want to glue leather to felt, then sew it.. it needs to stay flexible, and doesn’t have to be a really strong bond. I found out that my sewing machine will only sew through leather and felt if it’s glued in place first, so as long as the glue holds till then.
Thanks!

The zipper is in a leather jacket, so it’s difficult to replace the zipper on a home sewing machine. Can I repair or replace the zipper fabric which goes inside the insertion pin of the separating zipper, so it can again be placed inside the retainer box of the zipper bottom? Thanks

I have a service dog who has outgrown his training harness that was off the shelf and he needs a new one. I am making his new one from kangaroo leather with a nylon core. It will be based on the web master harness from ruff wear.
I was wondering if anyone had made their own harness before and had any tips for a newbie. I have worked with leather and nylon with success. This is my biggest project yet and have done my research.
I have a proper sewing machine. I will be riveting the joints and using brass hardware. I am planning on padding with foam and lambs skin. Can anyone suggest options for foam and is lamb’s fleece my best choice?
Any ideas would be appreciated. I want to do the best job I can. I have included a link to the type of harness and the type of leather for reference.

The nylon cost 10 dollars but you could scrounge that up anywhere.
The leather was donated to me by a local merchant but usually costs between 60 and 80 dollars a hide. You need 1 hide for small dogs, 2 for large dogs and Timber my big oaf needs 3 hides. A great dane might need more.
The kangaroo is great because it is 4 times stronger then cowhide and is only 1.2mm thick and is full grain.
The padding I haven’t gotten yet but I expect between 1 and 2 skins should do it.
All in all it would be expensive to do as a retail thing but I will post the direction online and if people want to try it they are welcome to it.
It took me about an hour to cut and sew the nylon. I am looking at spending 1 day in the leather construction phase and another day welding and attaching the steel support bar. I plan to take it slow though, it could probably be done faster.

I need to get supplies to Peru. Equipment to enable local people to start their own business. Things like computers, leather working tools, sewing machines, and of course clothing. We are part of an organization called Friends of Peru. www.friendsofperu.com
I heard there was an organization called Mano-Mano or something out of Minnesota that ships things down to South America in containers through the National Guard. I searched online phone directories as well as Yahoo and Google searches with no luck.

Mainly dresses, coats, etc.
My mom has a decent sewing machine. I think it’s a little older, but she said it works pretty well.
Are there any relatively affordable books or patterns anywhere?
I’ve sort of done leather work before, but mostly I draw (including studying anatomy) so I realize you must spend money to make money, but starting small is great by all means. xD
Thank you. :3

Ok well really me and my cousin are thinking about whenever we take one of our longhorn cows to slaughter getting the hide tanned and sewing the wide nose bands with a leather sewing machine. Then putting them on black or maybe other colors of nylon halters and adding firecut crystal conchos and maybe other types of conchos.
Then we will set up at different shows we go to and sales and sell them.
similar to this only with a nylon halter http://www.windstormranch.com/images/KJ-TH010lg.jpg
the hair ones like these on regular nylon halters http://www.halfcircleranch.com/images/Pictures/Halters/HairNosebands.jpg
and with conchos and bling on the hair like this http://www.shoppalstores.com/hadjes4/thumb//thumborn4clear1.jpg
I see these types of halter from anywhere between $30 and $125 but usually not quite like we are doing. How much would you pay for one of these.
or even conchos like these
http://www.sequinpurses.net/rhinestonecrosshotpink.jpg
these halters do hold up because the leather goes around both sides of the original nylon, which makes it even stronger.

Me and my dad want to start making bronc halters then breast collars and bridles etc. But here is the problem, we can not find bronc halter straps wholesale. We would love to buy them straight from where they are made. Would it be easier to just buy the leather sewing machine and do it our selves? So if you have a website or phone number of someone or a company who sells leather or cow hide or gader or snake or even ostrich bronc halter straps or where i can but a sewing machine to sew the cowhide to the leather that would be great!! Please if you have any helping hints or any info on doing this please tell me i am all ears.
(please no rude comments)
Thanks soooooooo much!!!!!

Is leather a hard material to sew with? I’d like to make a leather bag. I probably wouldn’t use real leather. It would be a faux leather that I would make it out of. Is faux leather expensive? What kind of needle should I use? I have a Janome Magnolia machine. I think Magnolia is the name of it. Would that work fine? I’ve only ever worked with silk, cotton, and a strech material. I really want a leather book bag but the ones that I found that I like are really expensive. Well, not really expensive. Just more than I want to pay. Which is $45. So, can you answer all of my questions?
Wow! Great answers. You both said almost the same things. I don’t have any of the stores the second person mentioned in my town though. There is only one fabric store in town and I think I can find somthing there. I’d have to look to see if I have that foot for my machine. Thanks for the tissue paper tip too! You both were a big help! I don’t know who I’ll choose for best answer!

I have metres of faux leather, or leatherette, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do with it, I’m fairly arty but can’t sew or use a sewing machine. It was originally used for making a chair, to do this i just used fancy tacks and pins. Up for any ideas and 10 points for the best answer.

I have a Singer model 1525 sewing machine. My first question:
The needle isn’t moving. I’ve had this machine for quite a while…I’d day at least 4 years. It’s been fine. but right now it seems jammed. It’s threaded right, the bobin and everything below is fine, no thread wrapped around anything, but the thing just doesn’t move! When I step on the pedal, I can hear it trying to work, but nothing happens. When trying to do it manually (the knob on the side) it doesn’t move either. I even unthreaded it entirely (bobin case included) and nothing happens. Do I need a new belt or sumthin? Around how much would that cost(since I’m askin questions)?
Next question: When/if I get this baby back up and running, is any1 sure if this model will sew marine vinyl(like on the seats of a boat)? and any tips on that other than a long stitch and a sharp leather needle? Is a nylon thread for upholstery good?

I’ve been into crochet and needlepoint for years, recently got into knitting. Now I’d like to pick up sewing for quilting, clothes- and costume-making. My question is: What should I look for in a sewing machine?
I will be working with wide array of fabrics (from thin silk or lace to leather and decorator fabrics). What features should I look for so I know the machine can handle this?
How important is the number of pre-programmed stitches?
What price range should I look at? I’ve seen machines from $70 up to $400+ …

We recently lost our home to fire, but it was contained to 3 rooms and we were able to remove many things. The smell of smoke is terrible on most of it. I have an antique sewing machine, among other antiques that have tremendous sentimental value but am clueless as how to remove the smell without causing more damage. I also have leather furniture and many wood pieces. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Thanks and a very Happy Easter to All… : ) Angie
