1: Which was NOT a major success of Reconstruction in the South?
an end to racist government policies
the transformation into an industralized, urban region
an end to tensions between the North and South
all of the above
2: The main goal of the Ku Klux Klan during Reconstruction was to
prevent African Americans from exercising their rights
gain control of the state legislatures
restore the Confederacy
improve the conditions for poor whites
3: The Fourteenth Amendment was part of a series of laws that
changed the way a President could hire government officials
ensured the civil rights of African Americans
restored the balance of power between the President and Congress
shifted the balance of power in favor of the Supreme Court
4: Reconstruction succeeded in rebuilding many of the South’s
plantations
forts
railroads
banks
5: The expansion of American industry was sparked mainly by
public welfare programs
technological advances and financial investments
a decline in productivity in Europe
government involvement in the economy
6: One thing a person could do in 1900 but not in 1865 was
ride on a train
sew a dress
play a phonograph
read at night
7: How did John D. Rockefeller gain control of the oil industry?
He formed a trust.
He practiced vertical consolidation.
He joined a cartel.
He practiced free trade.
8: The nation’s first major labor strike was begun by
railway workers angered about wage cuts and unsafe trains
steel workers upset by the use of scabs
women protesting lack of advancement in factories
Pinkerton agents who threw a bomb at police
9: What was the one key requirement that applicants had to meet to receive land under the Homestead Act?
They had to live on the land all year long.
They had to farm the land for five years in a row.
They had to file a claim with a bank.
They had to wheel portable cabins from plot to plot
10: What was a major incentive in the settling of the West?
the legal, private ownership of land
the award of large land grants to the railroads
the desire to limit slavery
the refuge offered for outlaws and the oppressed
11: One reason that the United States became more urban during the late 1800s is that
farm machines and factory-made goods reduced the need for farm labor
nobody wanted to live on farms anymore
immigrants did not know how to do farm work
union organizing of farm workers had not yet begun
12: Where did European immigrants often settle in the United States?
in western railroad towns
in their ports of entry
in the South
near lakes
13: Prohibition groups saw a link between drinking and
abuses by big business
lower public morals
anti-Asian feelings
high tariffs
14: Reformers who tried to solve social problems by helping the needy believed that
immoral behavior should be punished by deportation
stricter laws were needed to discourage unacceptable behavior
prosperous Americans should lead reform efforts
the cultures of immigrant groups should be respected
15: During the late 1800s and early 1900s, what segment of American society was most likely to attend college?
wealthy white men
New Englanders
gifted students
middle-class women

I cannot give credit to my eyes. The other day my buddy calls me over his place telling me he just finished a really cool thing (no more details provided). So I show up and takes me to his garage where he points to an object under a white sheet over his workbench.
He says: “are you ready?”. I say: “Dude, as ready as I will ever be man!”.
Anyway, he takes the sheet at unveils what seems to be a plain red metallic toolbox. I say: “Wow dude! you just invented the portable tool container! Wow! give me five you moron!”
He smiles dismissing my comment and says: “Wait! check this out!”.
My friend opens the toolbox, pulls out a power cord, something that looks like a light dimmer attached to a cable, and a 1 ft shaft. And then, as if he had done this a million times, he goes and plugs both cables to each side of the toolbox and threads the rod to one side. Then he pauses, looks me in the eye with a huge mischievous smile and says: “and now!.. the most important part!” , My friend reaches inside the toolbox one last time and reveals what to my astonishment looks to be a huge latex dildo!. He continues: “.. the cock!”, then he threads the ahem.. to the shaft, plugs the beast to the electrical outlet and without a pause presses the dimmer button and the “invention” starts making sewing machine motor noises and that dildo starts dancing back and forth like there is not tomorrow!
At this point, I am like.. wtf! wtf! this is insane dude! how, why, did you make this? are you insane? who is going to use this toolbox? your dog? you don’t even have a girlfriend! and now your chances of getting one are diminishing by the second with that “thing” in your garage!
He told me he always loved this f*king machine things and that wanted to built his own and that found some instructions online at a site called http://fukbox.com which BTW, does exist to my disbelieve.
I mean, do people really use these things in real life? am I living in the 19th century and missed out what is cool today?
So, there you go, I think he is nuts, and although I left in a little bit of shock I’ll still remain his friend because despite his eccentricities he is an awesome guy.. snif!
What do you think is he nuts? would you ever use something like this? let alone build it yourself?

My husband and I live in Houston, we are complete homebodies. We do drink alcohol sometime but not often (when we do it is cider or wine) we don’t have any money (another reason why we don’t drink alcohol), we can’t afford to do very much and even if we did a bar or a club would be the last place we would go. We are super video game nerds, I mean like own over eleven systems and own over 200 games.
My husband does work in an engineering firm but has no friends there, everyone is into sports, and never invite him to lunch, once he thanked the boss for lunch he bought and the boss said he didn’t even know he was there and his cubical is in the main walkway, and it seems to me like everyone acts as if it is high school. I am a housewife, and have no real contact with the outside world, a cell phone but no vehicle, we can’t afford it anyways, there aren’t any jobs available within walking distance. We own two cats but no dog. Our clothes are getting so warn out that they are starting to get holes in them and we can’t really afford to purchase a new wardrobe. In fact my birthday wish is to have my sewing machine fixed so I can sew our own clothing (I am really good at sewing but at this point it is too expensive)
We like to go to the park but often get treated like shit by the athletics that rome around. We did at one point have enough money to go to a comedy club once and we had to wait in line for an hour and a half and it was completely horrible, we were surrounded by retarded college girls and snotty ass holes who treated us like shit, so my husband pulls out his ds portable game system and I made him stop because that was leaving me feeling even more like a loser with no one to talk to and the couple in front of us were making fun of us and was trying to show of their great fake relationship (we do honestly have a great relationship and a much better one than their, but we were feeling uncomfortable just being there)
It seems everyone that lives in this state, is the total opposite of us. We have friends that live a county away but they never seem to answer our phone calls and never want to come visit us, (they are rich) and we can’t always visit them, they can’t relate to not having enough gas money to drive to the next county and I feel every time my husband says that it only makes them think even less than us. We used to smoke pot, but quite frankly we don’t anymore just for the fact that we are such losers that we don’t have a connection.
I am 20 and I should of been in college but I was kicked out of the house on my eighteenth birthday and I can’t afford college. I know of a few old friends form high school I could talk to but I am too embarrassed by the fact that everyone I look up is in college and I was expected to do great things) We desperately want to have children but we can’t afford to where as everyone else seems to live life without a care (I find myself jealous of those who have children and shouldn’t, and those ungrateful ass kissers who do shit in life living in a nice home with children). My husband and I work very hard, I would say much much harder than most people and yet have even to show for it) I desperately want to go to college but even if I did take a chance with student loans, I don’t have any transportation. (my husband has student loans that we can’t even pay for) We are married (we got married at the courthouse and were the only people there that spoke english, and I said that I didn’t was a ring because I knew we couldn’t afford one and I didn’t want to add more debt, even though i know for a fact I would of got one)
His family are clueless jerks (and kinda white trash), he has a sister who gets every last drop of attention and his relationship with his parent’s is that of a bank, we are in financial debt to them and their only interest with us seems to be us paying them back. I need glasses badly and have been without them for about three years now, I have lost hope in ever receiving any. I have extraordinarily large breast size 32 FF or 32 H depending on the manufacture and I can’t seem to afford any bras that fit properly, right now I am wearing a bra from Ross that is sized 32 dd and I am using it as a makeshift sling to hold them up. I know I need something better but considering the fact that we have 75 dollars for groceries for a week and a half, and we save up for our video games, and we won’t sell them, we wouldn’t get hardly anything and besides each other it is the only joy we have in life. It pisses me off that my husband does the most work and gets paid almost half as much as everyone else at work. We are absolutely no friends at all. And I am using a second account with a fake name to post this just so my husband won’t see this and know that I am unhappy, I have been denying the fact that we are both losers. Is there any way to improve our life in any way? I mean in any way possible? We really want to have children but I don’t even see that h
our relationship is fine, but therapy is way out of our price range anyways.
when I did have my job, I was laid off because our restaurant closed down, I didn’t qualify for unemployment because I didn’t make enough money, yeah I didn’t make enough money to qualify for help.
The video games we have are from when we were both in high school and we save up for them 10 dollars at a time, it is a sacrifice we both make.
Church, don’t make me even go there, that is the best place to go to be treated like the worst pile of garbage on the face of the earth. Let’s all face it, churches are capitalist organizations, places for social queens to show off and act like they are better than everyone. I don’t think going to church will ever make me feel better. I’ll go to church when I need to feel lowly in my thrift store clothes.

I am british and very proud because of what we have given to this world. What have you yanks done? We invented most things you use today,…..
trains, tv, computers, internet, penicillin, radar, jet engine, electricity (we invented it first, but you claimed it first), cat eyes, periodic table, oxygen and gravity (discovered), clockwork radio, adjustable spanner, sandwiches, engines, fire extinguisher, lawn mower, rubber band, tin can, corkscrew, mouse trap, sewing machine, postage stamp, perforated toilet paper, vacuum cleaner, hydraulic press, stainless steel, spallpox vaccine, viagra, shrapnel shell, tanks, gas masks, the equals sign, electrical generator, smallpox vaccine, dna finger printing, theory of evolution, windsurfing, football, rugby, tennis, cricket, badminton, catterpillar track, seat belt, belisha beacon, hovercraft, life boat, submarine, crossword puzzle, umbrellas, valves, fuel cell, x-rays, times tables, bicycles, lorries, bridge, suspension bridge, tubular steel, canals, docks, cranes, lighthouses, coal-gas lighting, steam boats, hot blast oven, wire rope, post office, mail van service, telephone, teleprinter, fax machine, radio, postcards, hypnosis, ultrasound, mri scanner, first cloned mamal, shot put, hammer throw, cycling, basketball, golf, mountaineering, piano, waterproof coat, paraffin, life rings, fountain pen, electric clock, ghillie suit, colour photography, chemistry, hollow needle, guided missile, steam turbine, radiotherapy, ejector seat, tractors, portable defibulators.
i think thats enough of that.
Also not to mention the most powerful country in the world from medievil times until the breakdown of our empire, the greatest in the world, where america was in it, and you may be richer but we have a higher gdp per capita and the pound is above the dollar.

Recently I asked a question about the reasons why Mr. McCain “toned” down his convention. One answerer told me to do my research. I’ve had a computer way before the internet. A Compaq 5.5, green screen, portable (it looked like a Singer sewing machine which was transportable), it weighed almost 29 pounds. There are now numerous search engines that I consider extra ordinary, i.e. Google, Mozilla FireFox, IE, etc.. I utilize them all prior to asking or answering a question or even asking a question. Do you just answer a question, specifically in politics, because of political affiliation, because you’re upset with the reasoning of the opposite parties or, because you fail to do your research? Because you may not does this prevent you from looking a the total picture?

I’m pretty small for my age, so anything I really like is eather too long (the sleves + the length) or too wide, but usually (almost always) just around the bust. >///< It’s really annoying because I can’t get anything I really like. I do have a sewing machine one of those mini/portable sewing machines that could fit in your jacket pocket and a mini sewing machine for traveling. I don’t know how to sew, but I’m learning. But is there anywhere I could take clothes to to get them resized? And about how much would it cost per shirt/dress/skirt, etc?

I like to customize clothes, for example, buy a skirt from a charity shop and hem it shorter or add material to it, or a blazer, etc etc..and I’m used to hand sewing. However, I am looking into getting a sewing machine for my birthday, but it needs to be under £80. It needs to be able to hem, be reasonably simple to use and easily portable. Thank you!

I recently acquired a Kenmore sewing machine that i believe is from around 1959.
I have the original owners manual
It’s portable but it’s on this stand and the sewing machine lifts up & there’s a compartment underneath. There is also a lid that goes on top of it & connects to to stand.
The sewing machine is in great condition but the box its a little torn up.
It works. Even the light works!!
So, my question is, is it worth anything?
Does anyone know where I could possible get it checked out in Orange County, California?
Here’s a picture that I took:

I know that it’s a very bad quality picture but you get the gist of it right?

I need a really basic really cheap sewing machine. I live in the US. Are portable models OK? I can pay up to about a hundred dollars US, because I embroider quite well on my own.

Will they both be good for a beginner? Which one does more things?
I am curious why the one that says in has 20 stitch options is less expensive than the one that does10, is less better?
I am so new to this. Thank you!

Ok, this little piece of crap looks and works like a stapler. See these links as a reference to exactly what the hell I’m talking about….. Ok, I can get the thing to kinda work, it makes a nice looking little line and all, but it doesn’t “lock”, like, I can just pull the string right out of the fabric. And I super need some help as to how to get this thing to work!! I’ve looked all over google and youtube, and haven’t found anything even close to this stupid little thing, so none of that’s helped me. So, yeah. Please?? Any advice?

i bought a brother xl-3510 sewing machine and its nice and all… and a neighbor of mine offered me her janome sewist-905, apparently 350 retail price and she got it for 150 on sale. now i bought the brother at about 150, and im wondering whether i should get the janome and sell the brother machine?? i havnt used it much, but i like that it has more decorative stitches than the janome.. however ive heard good things about janome. i am a senior in high school, pretty experienced sewer and i hope to go to FIT for fashion design, so i want to have a good durable, portable machine to lug around, that can help me with whatever more projects ill have in the future… should i keep my brother or buy the janome?

Im looking for the table top kind, portable (lightweight) or not, doesn’t matter. I live in an apartment where the extra bedroom is my craft room.
My mom has a HUGE cabinet type sewing machine which I used as a teen. Im mainly looking for something that easily hems clothes and makes simple blankets and pillows. It would be nice to keep the price under $200.
Any input would be great.
