What do you like to remember about Christmas from your childhood?

My Mother had a few Christmas albums that were played on the record player while we decorated the house and the tree. Her favorite was one by Gene Autry. The albums were 78s played one record at a time. Some of you know what I’m talking about here. We didn’t have much money but Mother loved Christmas. She always made Christmas candy and baked for days on end. Many of our gifts were home made and sometimes they were reconditioned toys, bikes, etc. that had been given to older siblings on Christmases past. Sometimes recognizable but that didn’t matter because Mother made them special for the new owner. New home made clothes for a favorite doll, new pajamas that were sewed on an old Singer treadle machine after we had all gone to bed. So on Christmas, not the gifts or candy or toys are my best memories, but my Mother who loved the season so. God Bless you, Mother. May you enjoy your first Christmas in heaven.

Were you, your parents or grandparents the first ot have indoor plumbin?

My mothers’ father was the first to have a car and a television in their area. I had many relatives who lived in the country with out houses. Everyone did have electricity. Quite few in the mountains had only radios. I have known one family with 5 sons who lived up a mountain with no electricity or plumbing. And this was only 30 years ago. My grandmother had her bathroom on the back porch as it was added before I was born. I helped use a wringer washing machine but it was electric. I remember the first electric sewing machine before that we should a treadle machine and our first color tv. My uncle was a traveling pastor and parishioners invited us to Sunday dinner. Ny friend told me they bought toilet paper as a special tribute cause the preacher was coming. Otherwise they used catalogs. This wasn’t all poverty it was just the times. I am very interested inothers memories and if/how they vary from one part of the country/world compared to the south.

know anything about ’singer sewing machines’?

We’ve had a singer sewing machine in our family since 1971 when my mother first bought it. I cant seem to find any site which will tell me if it is worth anything now. It works beautifully. the Model no. is 147. it’s a zig zag sewing machine and was made in 1971.
underneath the electric foot treadle is written:
PECA N.*194585
APROV. D.N.I.G.N*3212
INDUSTRIA BRASILEIRA
FABRICAD EM CAMPINAS-S.P.
I don’t know where it’s made in, so I don’t really know who to ask.
Can somebody help?

What could teachers do to make school more interesting?

I had a lot of great teachers. My 6th grade teacher taught us how to sew on a treadle sewing machine and we made our own costumes for a Christmas posada; we raised meal worms for the pet lizards; had two 6 foot pythons that roamed the classroom; ground corn on a metate to make our own tortillas; and raised chinchillas, to name a few things. Her name was Betty Sharp and she was awesome. We learned a lot about Mexico and had fun, too.

1. What did your best teacher do to make something interesting?

or, if you don’t have an answer for #1, then answer #2:

2. What could a teacher do to make a lesson interesting—like how would YOU teach it so you would learn best and have fun?
BTW– if you think you know Mrs. Sharp, it’s a different one, I’m sure. She is certainly no longer teaching ( for many years).
No, I don’t believe teachers should be entertainers. Yes, I work hard at my job as a teacher so that ALL students can learn. There is no one way to learn, so there must be more than one way to teach. If Universal Design for Learning is not part of a teacher’s lesson planning, instruction, and assessment then the teacher needs to get up to date. “Don’t Run!” and “Walk, Please!” are not the same. The better teachers know the difference.
Please give me examples of what you like or dislike to help me be a better teacher. When a teacher stops learning from his or her students, the students stop learning from the teacher. Also, students don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. I have them 7 hours a day. That’s time enough to teach to all of them.

How much would this antique be worth?

Today I bought a Free Sewing Machine Company treadle sewing machine in very good condition for $10 at a garage sale. I figured it was worth a lot more. It’s a black iron machine with golden feathers/flowers & peacocks on it. I read that it could be worth a lot more with the sewing table it’s originally placed on, which my grandma just so happens to own. So how much is my Free Sewing Machine Company treadle sewing machine worth & when does it date back to? Answers are plenty appreciated! :)

Can I convert a vintage Singer machine to run electric?

I recently inherited a beautiful treadle operated Singer sewing machine. Although it isn’t exactly in working order, it is in great shape- absolutely gorgeous. I have had a basic Brother machine for the past 10 years, nothing fancy, that I use for all of my sewing. However, it is not that great for sewing through denim and multiple layers of heavy fabrics, so I’ve been looking to buy a new machine. I’ve been doing some research this week on more heavy duty machines, and mostly everything I read says older machines are the way to go. So, I’m wondering if it would be possible to convert my vintage Singer? I would love to be able to put it to use! I just looked up the serial number, and the model is from 1916-1918 (I think). Serial number: G6271161
Would this be possible to convert? Or should I just buy something new?

Has anyone ever seen or heard of an old, sewing machine made by the Freedom company?

My wife has an old sewing machine, from the early 1940s, I assume. Her grandmother and her mother use to make clothing for their children on it. It is still in working condition.
We can’t find any information about it. It looks like a typical singer sewing machine, from that era, but it has the word freedom , carved out of iron, as part of the treadle foot.
the wooden cabinate has been refinished, in the back and on the right side, because of water damage. It is extremely heavy.

What kind of sewing machine is it when the needle moves up and down on it’s own if you plug it in?

Like, is it a rotary, electric, or treadle?
The reason I’m confused is because it has a pedal but the needle moves on it’s when I plug it in.
And FYI i had an old rotary sewing machine that you plugged in.
It is not computerized. It’s an old black singer with fancy metal plates. it has a foot pedal but i can’t seem to get it to do anything.
Why is sewing on it’s own? What’s broken about it?

Singer Sewing Machine enthusiasts?

I am considering selling a 1930’s singer treadle sewing machine, which would need quite a little tlc: some removable parts are missing and the cabinet could be doing with a sanding, but except that, it is in good condition and may be of interest to someone who likes restoring things – how much would you pay? £75?
